I'm intrigued by the rise of low-cost 3D printers and this is definitely the trajectory of things to come. I can picture a world when we can print any part we need so I wonder if there are already books are articles on the implications of this next wave? How might society adapt and change as a result of instant access to tools, parts, and designs without ever having to set foot in a store or waiting for things to arrive? What are the career opportunities that will open up and what are the jobs that will be lost as a result of this sea change?

An interested related question is how we will educate people to access these wonderful tools. I would love to use a 3d printer but I'm not facile with how to utilize the software to program them to build prototypes I've dreamt up. When Google first came out years ago I said to my friend, "... it's no longer gonna be about having the information available, but how you ask the question to find the information." Right now my translation work for prototypes is done in china... I can imagine many opportunities continuing to arise here for similar work.

For me outsourcing actually benefited for me. I believe the requirement is quite increasing for such work and the day is no longer away.
