Bernzomatic TS4000 Trigger Start Torch
Blowtorch with instant on/off trigger
I recently taught my seven-year-old how to light a fire with a ferrocerium rod and a steel striker. I wanted to teach him the hard way before showing him the easy tools like matches, lighters, or my favorite – the BernzOmatic TS-4000 blow torch ($38).
I’ve kept a BernzOmatic torch on my workbench or in my toolbox for the better part of a decade. When the need arises for a bit of heat or a quick source of ignition, this is the first tool I reach for. The BernzOmatic is a straightforward blow torch with push-button ignition, a button-lock to keep it running, and a safety to prevent accidental fires. It can run on propane, but I typically use map gas (or the modern equivalent).
The piezo ignitor works every time making it the most reliable source of fire I have in my home. I’ve used this torch for everything from lighting campfires to setting up Christmas luminaries, forging steel, melting glass, making creme brule, melting cheese on tacos, and taking out house flies in mid-flight. When you want heat on demand, this torch delivers. This torch feels bullet proof and built to last. But if it were stolen or destroyed tomorrow, I’d go out and buy a new one immediately. It’s that good. There is a higher intensity version, the TS-8000 ($40). I haven’t tried that, but it looks to be built similarly and I have no reason to doubt its quality. If you need fire on demand, consider one of these torches.
