As with all tools: it depends on what you need it for…  That being said Chromebooks are GREAT!!!  The Pixel line is Outstanding!!!

The Chromebook Pixel was consistently reviewed as having outstanding performance and quality, but the price prohibited the reviewer from recommending purchase.  If this value logic applied to cars, we would all be driving bland econoboxes.  For a tool that we use many times per day, and which serves as a window to the world, investing in a Chromebook Pixel will be rewarding.  I can’t afford a car that outperforms the norm, but my Chromebook Pixel consistently satisfies.

I have been a chromebook user since I bought the first one available (the Acer).   I now own a 2015 Google Pixel with the i5 cpu; it was about $1k.  While you can spend more and get the i7 cpu I doubt most people could tell the difference.  I do think the Pixel is the best chromebook you can buy, but today there are other chromebooks that are supposed to be very good for much less money; the reviews of the new Dell chromebooks have been very positive.

I recommend the Toshiba Chromebook 2.  Bought 1 for my wife 9 months ago, she never touches her windows notebook anymore.  Recently bought 1  for myself.  Love the resolution & backlit keyboard.

Here’s a good review  http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-chromebook/

The Asus Flip Chromebook is currently the best chromebook that’s not super-expensive (I.e. the Pixel). Get the model with 4Gb of ram, not the 2Gb model (occasionally you’ll have to wait a bit for it to become available, but it’s usually not long). This should cost less than $300, and get you a small, light device with a decent keyboard, touch screen, flippable tablet mode, good battery life, and good OS support. For example, the new ”Android apps on chrome books” experimental support is available on the new pixel and the asus flip.

Best bet is to go to reddit.  They have a frequently updated buyer’s guide that lets you know the best model for each feature set.  Chromebooks still have a wide variation in price and specs, to find the ”best” one you need to identify what is important to you first.  https://www.reddit.com/r/chromeos
