I'm looking for a field guide, survival handbook or otherwise that details the identification and preparation of wild plant life. Anybody have any recommendations? It can be part of a larger book, if that book contains a nice detailed section on the subject.

'The Foragers Harvest' by Samuel Thayer has always steered me right. Its not really oriented towards "survivalist" foraging, but has a lot of great info on wild plants which can be readily found, as well as how they can be properly identified and prepped for eating.

  • Samuel Thayer's guides are incredible and probably the best foraging books around. However, they are region specific and targeted mostly to the midwest and east coast.

Plants are region specific. What geographical area do you have in mind?

  • All I really need is North America - to be really specific, Northern California. But ideally this resource would also have general information about identifying edible plants anywhere in the world.

I can recommend Edible Wild Plants, by John Kallas. John teaches outdoor workshops around the country, but is based in Portland, Oregon. I have take some of the workshops and they are very informative and precise about the safety of the plant. Highly recommend the book and his classes, through Wild Food Adventures.com
