Food wrap dispenser

I'm tired of fumbling with plastic wrap and foil in their factory packaging - it takes a lot of effort to cut food wrapping neatly, especially the plastic wrap. Is there a superior dispenser that you could recommend? Something industrial maybe?

We use a wrapmaster model 1500 . This works rather well for plastic wrap.

I used something like this in a food service job. The sliding cutter made it a lot easier to cut the wrap without it folding over and sticking to itself.

  • I suggested this type of dispenser for a cool tool over a year ago.

If you want a high volume solution, you can't beat a knife and a nylon chopping board. Place the roll alongside the board. Then pull wrap across the board, cut with sharp knife, place the object on the plastic. Wrap and repeat. This leaves a loose end for the next pull. The cut doesn't have to be perfect as the wrap will tear across minor gaps. A nylon board has the right stickiness for plastic wrap.

We used this in a cheese shop, fast, reliable and painless. May not be suitable for one off wraps in the home kitchen or where a bowl covering etc is needed, but I still do this if I need to wrap a number of items.

The plastic wrap we buy has a what's called a slide or glide cutter included with the plastic wrap. it fits over the sharp "teeth" that would normally cut the wrap.

It's by far, the best tool for the job. If you do a search on "plastic wrap glide cutter" or "slide cutter" you should find some examples, but if you buy a brand of wrap that includes one, you can easily keep it and use it for other brands - as long as the size is the same.

I'm not sure if it would work for aluminum foil, but I might be give it a try. The width of the foil we use doesn't exactly match the width of the plastic wrap, so I haven't tried it yet.

Assuming the blade is on the lid, turn the box upside down, so that you're pulling down with the heel of your hand instead of up with your fingers. I haven't studied the mechanics of why it works so much better, it just does.

I own a number of restaurants and this is a constant problem. We finally discovered the Kenkut 3 from Tablecraft for about $45 and it's really solved this problem. link text.

Costco's consumer plastic wrap packaging has a cutter in a simple track. One lays the plastic over the track and the cutter just slides over it and cuts it: no pulling or sawing.

Buy the wrap in the cardboard box, they are usually designed so you can cut/rip it on the edge of the box. For aluminium foil i can't think of any easier way even if i were given all the money and engineering time in the world, just pull out and rip.

For plastic foil the stickyness can be a problem, if you store the wrap in the fridge it will become less as sticky but then you loose one nice property of the foil, it's harder to wrap it around plates etc.

We use the Wrapmaster for foil and plastic. Best thing since sliced bread! Every time I use it I get a big grin on my face because it makes it so EASY! You load in your roll of foil or plastic wrap, pull out the desired amount and push the lid down - no sliding a cutter, no uneven tearing - just a beautifully simple cut across. Next to my dutch oven, it's my favorite kitchen tool!

Try the Sulco Brand Food Wrap dispensers. They are great! Mount to a drawer, inside the pantry door or on the underside of the upper cabinets. Works better than anything and the refill rolls are available at Walmart. I found that the Sulco brands of refills are much stronger and have more cling than anything else as well. It holds foil too.
