We have goats, sheep and ponies, so battling weeds with chemicals is a last resort for large patches of noxious plants. For spot killing of weeds, I prefer physical removal. I have a cutting hoe that easily slices through just about anything, but it's large, heavy and sharp, so it's a wee bit dangerous, especially when a curious pony wants to see what you're doing. I also have a long-handled dandelion weeder. Since it has a small, sharp blade and I push it down into the ground, it's safe to use even around the most curious livestock, but the straight handle doesn't allow me to comfortably apply enough force to cut through tough weeds like thistle or buffalo bur.

Does anyone make a dandelion weeder-type tool with a D-handle like you find on some shovels? Or a good, sturdy D-handle that I could attach to my existing tool?

I have a dandelion ”popper” made by Fiskars that I highly recommend. Fiskars Uproot Weed and Root Remover.

See the Cool Tools review of the ”Weed Hound” (pushed in by foot) at http://kk.org/cooltools/weed-hound-dand/

See my comment there: the item is no longer available from Amazon, but from All Garden Tools for $30, at http://buyallgardentools.com/product/hound-dog-products-hdp1-6-weed-hound/
