I have an app from years ago for iphone called Starmap, it's pretty good, but I'm wondering if there is one designed for iPad that is better?

Star Walk is fantastic. It shows you what's in the sky in realtime (based on the compass and spacial orientation) and can show you any date in history as well. It also has multiple zoom levels and a night mode. I'm really impressed every time I use it.

In addition to your app, my favorite astronomy supplemental tool is a green laster pointer. Here: http://kk.org/cooltools/archives/001420.php It really does allow you to point to stars. One tip: if you have ocassion to go to China, pick one up there. You can get very powerful ones for $15.
