What’s the best way to clean cat barf from a carpet and upholstery?

I think this depends in part on the quality of the barf. If it’s mostly dry — for instance, all relatively fresh kibble — you might pick up the loose bits, then let it dry completely, then give it a good vacuum. If it’s mostly wet — a hairball or partially digested kibble with lots of liquid (or a mouse) — pick up the solids and blot it well using Nature’s Miracle or something similar.

Either way, the next step is probably a good carpet shampooing. The best carpet shampoo I’ve found for small spills is foam shaving cream. Spray it on, rub it in, give it a scrub, then blot it with a damp cloth to get rid of the foam. This might not be as effective on a really liquid stain, but it’s definitely a start. (You’ll probably want to check your carpet for colorfastness in an inconspicuous spot.)

I had 2 cats with digestive disorders that puked several times a week each.  They ruined the carpet in my condo and I didn’t buy quality furniture.  When we moved to an older house we knew carpet was out so we replaced the worn out floor with new hardwood.  An expensive solution but it was very easy to clean.

Get Serious! (yes, that’s really it’s name) works great for cat barf. There are verbose instructions on the bottle. Getting anything out of upholstery is more difficult, of course, but we’ve even had luck with ”Get Serious!” there.

If this is an ongoing problem, I highly recommend the ”Bissell 3624 SpotClean Professional Portable Carpet Cleaner” which I use with Bissell Pet Stain Portable Machine Formula. This machine is a life saver for people with sick (or occasionally sick) animals — particularly animals that are fond of barfing at 2 am.

I used to have a cat that threw up very often, and currently have ones that do so occasionally. The best method I’ve developed over the years is to put a couple paper towels on top of the puke; let the puke soak into the towels. Leave like this until dry (may take a day or two). Vacuum up the dry bits left on the carpet. This should take care of it, in most instances. If the puke is really dark and leaves color on the carpet, spray a pet stain remover (I think mine’s Woolite) on it several times and leave in for at least five minutes. Scrub with a damp rag in circular, up-and-down and left-and-right motions until stain is gone. Scrub again with a clean damp rag.

This stuff is a miracle. Cheap and self-contained (no machine needed). A miracle!

Bissell Pet Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner

The same thing we use for every mess Pinky: vinegar, water and a few drops of dish soap.

I use a rubber or plastic dustpan and a medium / wide plastic or metal putty paddle to scrape the wet or dry mass off the surface and a paper towel gets the rest and wipes off the tools into the toilet. A small (or large) wet/dry shopvac and a spray bottle of water or water and vinegar works to rinse the surface and dry it. With carpet the shop vac serves to lift the moisture up and out so it does not degrade the glue or floor substrate. Just spray and vaccuum several times and it can be dried with a hair dryer. It is also effective on urine spills but rinse out the vacuum can after wards.

Being in Australia I’m sure that the products we have won’t be there, but in general I’ve found that enzymatic cleaners work best of bodily fluids (kid pee, poo and vomit).

I like the Get Serious odor stain clear as well. I personally used that and performance is satisfying.
