Multi-purpose portable work bench

We’ve been restoring a decrepit 1895 Georgian Revival house for about 5 years now. Early on, my father in law gave me a Bossmate to use as scaffolding for plaster work and the Bossmate has been invaluable.

It’s an extremely simple design, comprised of a square tube steel frame acting as legs which accept and support a couple of 2x10s as the worksurface. The working load is 350 pounds.

You can tailor the length of the 2x10s to your circumstances. I just keep a couple of 8 footers sitting around to use with the Bossmate.

I also have aluminum ladders and a shorty workbench but the Bossmate gives me a very broad 34″ high work surface. When I need a bit more height for tall ceiling work I add jerry rigged platform of two milk crates connected on top with a piece of 3/4″ plywood (I know it sounds wobbly but real milk crates have huge load carrying capacity and if you connect them correctly they’re very stable).

Although the Bossmate’s 1″square feet have plastic inserts, because of their small footprint I use four pads (and old towel stapled around a 10″ square piece of plywood) to protect my flooring from dings.
