Victorinox Swiss Army Cadet
Thin Swiss Army knife with metal sides
Several previous reviewers have recommended Swiss Army knives and they make good points (no pun intended), but let me make a case for the Cadox Alox and the Alox line in particular.
If you’re the sort of person who likes to carry a small blade and another tool or two (or three, or more) in your pocket, then you know that Swiss Army offers seemingly countless versions of their folding knives. The Cadet offers the four tools that I find the most useful in the thinnest possible package. These tools are: – Large blade, good for general cutting (opening packages, etc.) – Cap lifter with larger flathead screwdriver blade – Can opener (I’ve never used it) with flathead screwdriver small enough to fit into many Philips slots (used a lot!) – Nail file (also used a lot).
As with all knives in the Alox series, it has aluminum rather than plastic sides, which keeps it a little thinner. Moreover, it doesn’t have a corkscrew or a dedicated Philips driver (as popular models such as the Camper and the Tinker have), which makes it thinner still. Bottom line, you can keep it in your pocket, as I have for over a year, in the same space that a single-bladed folding knife occupies. Why not an even smaller model, such as the Classic? The little keychain knifes may work for you, but I find the tiny blades too flimsy. If you don’t care for a nail file, you may want to look at models such as the Farmer, with a reamer and a saw blade or the Pioneer with just the reamer. Your less-strained pocket will thank you!
