What are the “anchor points” in YOUR shop?<\/p><\/div>\n

In\u00a0this video<\/a>,\u00a0Adam Savage\u00a0<\/strong>talks about the anchor points of a shop (the machines and workstations that the rest of the shop orbits around), the fact that you can never have enough casters on shop components (and on-hand), and other useful tidbits. For me, the pearl here is how he keeps his shop cleaned and organized as he works. As he puts it: \u201cwork, work, work, put-away, put-away, put-away.\u201d By taking periodic breaks and cleaning as you go, you don\u2019t end up with an insurmountable mess when you\u2019re done. I\u2019ve never done this, but I plan to start. Adam also talked in one of his previous organization videos about \u201cgiving a gift to your future self\u201d by doing a thorough cleaning and organizing at the end of a project so that future you is ready to roll when starting the next project. Wise words.<\/p>\n

On\u00a0Jimmy DiResta\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0Instagram stories<\/a>, he shows a neat trick for cutting small diameter copper tubing (brass, too?) by scoring it first with a razor knife and then snapping it off in a vise.<\/p>\n

What I loved about this project is the use of the different tips in a cheap\u00a0woodburning kit<\/a>\u00a0to burn rivets and square details into the foam material.<\/p>\n

Skill Set: Preparing a Mold Box and Mixing Silicone<\/strong><\/p>\n

For those playing along in our molding and casting series (first installments\u00a0here<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0here<\/a>), I hope you made your mold box for our first one-part mold. Here\u2019s my quick n\u2019 dirty box. I made it from scraps of foamboard. Because my object was not flat on the bottom, I embedded it in clay.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s now ready for silicone. The silicone that comes with the Alumilite kit is a ten-to-one mix ratio (by weight), silicone to catalyst. Alumilite also has\u00a0a video<\/a>\u00a0on how to mix their silicone. Follow the instruction on your RTV rubber, if different.<\/p>\n

As always, refer to\u00a0Paige Russell\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0one-part molding class<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0Instructables<\/em>. Among other things, she shows a neat trick for easily measuring the volume of needed silicone using tapioca, rice, or similar grains.<\/p>\n

Tips for Molding:<\/strong><\/p>\n

*\u00a0Wear\u00a0gloves<\/a>.<\/p>\n

* If you\u2019re measuring your silicone by weight on a digital scale, cover the scale with a Ziploc bag (or similar) to protect from spills<\/p>\n

* Make sure to mix the rubber and catalyst before combining and then make sure you mix them together really well. No streaks!<\/p>\n

* Pour the silicone into one corner of your mold box and let it flow in, around, and over your object.<\/p>\n

*\u00a0Alumilite offers a handy\u00a0Volume Calculator<\/a>\u00a0for determining how much silicone rubber you need.<\/p>\n

There is a\u00a0larger Alumulite starter kit\u00a0<\/a>available that has twice the amount of silicone, resin, and clay than the\u00a0first kit<\/a>\u00a0I recommended.<\/div>\n

Reader\u00a0Justin Gasal\u00a0<\/strong>sent me this tip and even\u00a0made a little video<\/a>. He uses square plastic bottles to make removable parts bins for his tool drawers. I do something similar. I use segmented plastic food trays. Here\u2019s my rotary tool accessories organized in a party platter container. I cut\u00a0tool cloth<\/a>\u00a0to go in each bin.<\/p>\n
