Tray for car<\/strong>
Don\u2019t laugh but I often eat my lunch in my car \u2013 while listening to podcasts. This generic lightweight\u00a0plastic car tray<\/a>\u00a0has changed my life. It hangs on the steering wheel and makes a level tray for a sandwich and drink. No more food messes! It can also serve as a mobile office platform to write on or support a tablet or very small laptop. There are no moving parts; its shape ingeniously holds it level on most steering wheels. Don\u2019t like plastic? You can find\u00a0bamboo versions<\/a>\u00a0on Amazon. A tray like this is such a boon that I traced its shape and cut it out on scrap plywood to make a second one for my van. \u2014 KK

Talking Points for Life<\/strong>
Talking Points for Life<\/a>\u00a0has all the advice you could ever need for all kinds of uncomfortable conversations. Like exact wording on\u00a0how to decline a request for money<\/a>\u00a0(\u201cI\u2019m sorry, I have a personal boundary of not mixing money and friends.\u201d) or techniques on\u00a0redirecting negative conversations by\u00a0bridging<\/a>\u00a0(\u201cHowever, the real issue here is\u2026\u201d). There is also a page on\u00a0\u201cHow to encourage someone to answer your question instead of saying, \u2018I don\u2019t know\u2019\u201d<\/a>\u00a0which is kind of a pet peeve of mine. \u2014 CD\u00a0

Learn cryptography the fun way<\/strong>
The Manga Guide to Cryptography<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is a 190-page comic book that clearly explains the fundamentals of cryptography. You\u2019ll learn about the foundations of encryption, symmetric-key algorithms, public-key encryption, practical applications of encryption, told in the form of a fun and engaging story. \u2014 MF

Listen to college radio stations
<\/strong>If you\u2019re tired of your music algorithms try out\u00a0campus-fm.com<\/a>. You can click through stations quickly, add your favorites and play them at random. College stations always seem to play the coolest, chillest indie music and it\u2019s a nice change for my ears. Right now my favorite stations to drop into are Chapel Hill\u2019s\u00a0WXYC 89.3<\/a>\u00a0and New Mexico\u2019s\u00a0KUNM 89.9<\/a>.\u2014 CD

Timeless photography<\/strong>
I\u2019d like to shamelessly promote my 50-year project to document the remote parts of Asia that very few people have seen. I call it\u00a0Vanishing Asia<\/a>.\u00a0These gigantic books have thousands of photos of exotic traditions, rituals, festivals, costumes and disappearing architecture. I not only put years and years into traveling to the end of the roads, but also I put my heart and soul into collecting these images for posterity. There are still some copies of this\u00a0<\/a>immense 3-volume set<\/a>\u00a0available on Amazon, and they are currently discounted. These are the last copies because there will not be any more printed. Amazon says they can be delivered by Christmas, for a tremendously wow gift. \u2014 KK

Last minute gift idea<\/strong>
In addition to Recomendo, I write a newsletter called\u00a0The Magnet<\/a>. It\u2019s difficult to describe because each issue is different. Sometimes I interview an interesting person like\u00a0Jude Stewart<\/a>, who wrote a catalog of smells. Sometimes I post photos and comments of unusual things I come across when travel.
